There are two ways to transfer to upper secondary level in Basel-Stadt - with a grade point average or via the voluntary entrance examination. Anyone who has not achieved the required grade point average and grade point total in the first report card of the sixth year of primary school can take the voluntary entrance examination Register.

Students who wish to write the Sek I entrance exam in Basel-Stadt are released from school on the morning of the exam. Students are registered by the class teacher at the end of May.
